Screening

The Gibraltar Health Authority offers various screening programmes to check for diseases and health conditions before there are any signs or symptoms. The aim is to offer screening to the people who are most likely to benefit from it. Screening is a way of identifying apparently healthy people who may have an increased risk of a particular condition. Further information and contact details related to the Gibraltar Health Authorities Screening services can be found here. We often refer to some health checks as screening. These are not screening programs because for a program to be classified as screening it has to meet internationally and academically agreed criteria as described by Wilson WHO_PHP_34.pdf. That is not to say that some tests we undertake are not beneficial to health, however from a public health perspective, we do not classify certain tests as screening programs.

Recommendations/Future directions

Future phases of the Joint Strategic Needs Assessment will focus on analysing and understanding screening uptake data. This will provide a greater inside into the groups who have lower engagement with screening programs locally, which will help inform targeted health promotion strategies and screening campaigns.
